Marine Project Group

Marine Project Group is a Sole Proprietorship and was formed in 1986 to address a small niche in the International Marine Industry around the world tasked with performing urgent repairs while keeping the installation operating and managing Operations for major Oil Tanker Ship Owners. In 2006 Christopher Chapman was promoted to Captain on Supertankers and in 2010 was promoted again to Superintendant. My background in Repairs and Senior Operations of the largest and most complex structures in the Oil Industry has allowed me a unique insight as to the most modern available technologies and how they are utilized to greatest effect.

I am very much a "hands on" Officer with exceptionally high technical skills in the operation, repair and maintenance of Marine Structures. Starting Marine Project Group and striking out on ones own requires courage and confidence. I specialize in the repair, maintenance and operation of VLCC / FPSO and other Marine Structures, perform FLIR inspections of switchboards, install and repair complex Electrical, Electronic and Control systems, supervise Refits and Drydockings, perform Load Master and Pilotage Duties, etc. I am also experienced in Hydraulics and Pneumatics. More details are available at www.marineprojectgroup.com Having these varied interests is important in order to keep an overall active and positive frame of mind and it is my goal to offer a well rounded knowledge base to my Clients, Customers and Employers such that they can be assured that every aspect of the job shall be addressed down to the smallest detail. Honour and integrity, performing the task at hand with safety and efficiency to the highest standards are the foremost attributes of my work ethics both in my business and on the Ship.

Nanaimo Waterjet / Island Waterjet

Marine Project Group has expanded to now include a Waterjet Cutting jobshop. A wholly owned subsiderary of Marine Project Group, Nanaimo Waterjet has invested $280,000 utilizing the latest Omax Waterjet. A Water Jet Cutter , also known as a Waterjet is a tool capable of slicing into metal or other materials such as granite using a jet of water at high velocity and pressure, or a mixture of water and an abrasive substance. The process is essentially the same as water erosion found in nature but greatly accelerated and concentrated. It is often used during fabrication or manufacture of parts for machinery and other devices. It is the preferred method when the materials being cut are sensitive to the high temperatures generated by other methods. It has found applications in a diverse number of industries from mining to aerospace where it is used for operations such as cutting, shaping, carving and reaming . See www.nanaimowaterjet.com for more info.

FPSO Assistant OIM, Load Master and Marine Surveyor

Assistant OIM and Cargo Superintendant for two Floating Production Storage Offloading installations located Nigeria and Equatorial Guinea .

At these installations, I was tasked with keeping 35 year old liquid cargo equipment operating, operating and maintaining the SPM and loading Offtaking tankers utilizing both a local and expat workforce and no spare parts and no shoreside support whatsoever of any kind. It was a situation of “This is what you have to work with and find a way to make it happen”. Along with many other highly skilled professionals we were overwhelmingly successful in keeping these Fields safely operating with a zero accident rate in appalling conditions that would have immediately and repeatedly shut down operations in any other part of the world.

Also over the years I have become proficient at Cargo and loadline surveys, bunker surveys, damage surveys, quantity and quality surveys of bulk and liquid cargoes. Performed Load Master duties for several liquid bulk contracts. Performed Australia Maritime Safety Authority inspector duties while assigned to the Vancouver area. Also experienced in the lab work required for the Oil and Shipping Industries. Example, testing for sulphur contents, finding API gravity, viscosity, pour point, chloride tests, metals contents, etc.

Marine Electrician

Over a two year period back when I was 19 years old I operated my own Marine Electrical business as a full time Marine Electrician and I still do frequent Marine Electrical installations and repairs. Some of my accomplishments were the complete rewire of a 140 foot coastal vessel with navigation light alarms, a automated Unmanned machinery Space (UMS) system for 5 engines, bilge alarms, main 208V 3 phase electric and control panels as well as emergency battery and charging systems all of my own design and passed by Flag State Inspectors. And this was at the age of 19. Since then my skills have increased much more. There were many other jobs installing radars, autopilots, and other marine electronics, ect. Many other rewires, and smaller repairs. Pictures of my recent work are available on website www.marineprojectgroup.com under tab Completed Projects. Since then while on Seagoing Assignments, I have been successful at repairing vital components like boiler controls, radars, sounders, gas detectors, etc, that would otherwise have resulted in the vessel receiving a deficiency or otherwise been unable to sail until a shore tech was available. In this age of high technology I feel it is essential that one possess these highly technical skills.
